Listen you Meghalaya’s Patriarchal Politicians & Activists!

Gertrude Lamare’s open letter calling out the hypocrisy of BJP/Congress/Regional Minions in #Meghalaya about women

Dear Honorable Members of the Meghalaya Congress and the BJP and other political wannabes,

It is quite troubling to see how violence against women by people holding public offices, is treated as political fodder in Meghalaya. Instead of creating a discourse about the urgency to revisit questions of gender, power and patriarchy within a matrilineal context, and implementing proper available systems of legislation and prosecution to deal with sexual violence, the Congress and the BJP are busy mudslinging each other and debating about who is more guilty, the former Governor V. Shamuganathan or Julius Dorphang, the MLA and the Home Minister, HDR Lyngdoh.

Listen up you fuckers, this is more than your self-absorbed party politics

Listen up you fuckers, this is more than your self-absorbed party politics; this is about patriarchal violence that all of you are guilty of, this is about the patriarchal values that breed on the flesh of Khasi society as it exists today, that is born in between the tussle of communal wars in the state, that is entrenched in the foundation of Churches, temples and mosques- this hate for women, manifested in the extreme in the recent reports of molestation and rapes, is something all of you are guilty of. Pressure groups and other regional parties and groups are no less.

When have all of you ever vocalized or done anything about rights of women, except for when women who you see as sisters, mothers, friends, lovers and fellow-members of a community or church, are assaulted or discriminated against?

The issue of violence against women is not about who amongst you men are more innocent

You’re doing nothing here but ensuring the fact that you give a fuck only when your sense of ownership is being underlined. Again, the women’s wings in these organizations, and even yours perform according to the dictates of their male counterparts and are there primarily as shallow representative platforms which neither resonate with real everyday problems of women nor try, even a little, to counter the patriarchal and misogynistic elements of Meghalaya society. Which pressure group has ever had a Woman leader. Less we talk about the so called ‘democratic’ traditional institution, so much the better.

The issue of violence against women is not about who amongst you men are more innocent, it is not about who deserves State power, it is about how women deserve to be perceived and treated as independent and equal human beings, not just tokens of your culture, or your community, your religions, your parties or your fucking countries.

Yours in Anger
