Woodcut Worlds of Treibor Mawlong

Treibor Mawlong is one of the most exciting contemporary artists from our hills. From Mairang in West Khasi Hills, Treibor studied at Kala Bhawan, Shantiniketan (2006-2012). He has been a recipient of Lalit Kala Academy scholarship and Inlaks Fine Arts Award (2014). But more than the awards, it is his desire to sketch the tales and experiences of lives between Mairang and Shillong that have made him a cult artist for many. His facebook page U Mawsawa is a definitive stop in the artistic life of Khasi-Jaintia Hills. He has just finished drawing a comic book called Adadak Bad Ki Lok jong U based on stories he heard as bedtime stories from his aunt. For Raiot, Treibor sent his Wood Block cut prints. He said,

“Though this particular medium(wood-block cut) is a new thing for me but i like the result, bold and simple. These wood-cut images are fragmented random memories of scenes and events i recreate from encounters with the surrounding space (Mairang-Shillong).”

With my perceived information (about art) of a lay man, I see your art SO BOLD, SO SIMPLE and “PLAIN BEAUTIFUL”. Way to go !
