Bah Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew recommended as a Judge of Meghalaya High Court

For some time Meghalaya High Court has been functioning with only two judges. In a welcome development, in a notice dated 25th September, Collegium comprising of CJI Dipak Misra, CJI Designate Ranjan Gogoi & Justice Madan Lokur  recommended the name of Mr Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Senior Advocate for the appointment as the judge of Meghalaya High Court. The Notice said:

“This file relates to the proposal for appointment Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Advocate, as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court.

The above recommendation has been made by the then Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court on 26th February 2018, in consultation with his sole colleague. The Government of Meghalaya has conveyed their no objection to the proposal.

At present, there is no Judge in the Supreme Court conversant with the affairs of the Meghalaya High Court to ascertain suitability of Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew for elevation.

For purpose of assessing merit and suitability of Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew for elevation to the High Court, we have carefully scrutinized the material placed in the file. Apart from this, we have had interaction with Shri Thangkhiew. On the basis of interaction and having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Advocate, is suitable for being appointed as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court. The Collegium, therefore, resolves to recommend that Shri Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, Advocate, be appointed as Judge of the Meghalaya High Court.
